Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain refers to discomfort or pain in the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. This joint allows for the movements necessary for chewing, talking, and yawning. TMJ pain can result from various disorders collectively known as temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD).

In most patients, TMJ pain is a result of movement or displacement of the cartilage disc that causes pressure and stretches certain sensory nerves. Popping or clicking noises occur when the disk snaps into place when the jaw moves. In addition, the chewing muscles may spasm or not function efficiently, causing pain and tenderness.
